You’ve heard the expressions: “People buy people” and “People buy from people they know, like and trust”.
Whilst there is no doubting the validity of these statements let us not lose sight of the fact that we also live in a fast paced “now” society, where time is of the essence now more than ever before. People don’t like to miss out by having to wait until tomorrow for what they could have capitalised on yesterday.
Networking is a skill that anyone in business will neglect at their peril. It allows us to develop trust to the point where people will by from us. The only drawback of networking however, is time: It can literally take weeks or months to get a referral or an introduction to the qualified buyer of your company’s products or services. This lack of agility that networking suffers from means that time-driven events and offerings allow much greater scope for exploiting the live “here and now” arena that the telephone occupies.
We’d all love that golden introduction or referral but when time simply does not allow for it, you need to be competent in using other means at your disposal. Using the telephone gives the greatest possible likelihood of reaching another person without leaving your office. So, go route one: Pick up the phone. Of course, as with anything else, using the phone works best when you you’ve been trained to use it well and have practised using it consistently.
To increase the likelihood of your success in building a relationship with the people you want to reach, also call (and email) people in your network that may be able to effect a referral or introduction on your behalf. In this way you create two possible ways top reach them and they become aware of you from more than one source. This also reinforces the point that there is some importance or urgency attached to you contacting them.
